Devi Annapoorna is the personification of beauty and nourishment. She is the answer to the great western philosophical question of whether beauty sustains purpose. Wife of Shiva and a form of Parvati Herself, She is Hinduism’s presiding deity over nourishment. Her name, Annapoorna, is a portmanteau of ‘anna’, which stands for foodgrain, and ‘poorna’, which conveys fulfilment.
The unparalleled beauty of Devi Annapoorna is captured in this fine Thanjavur painting. Clad in silks of scarlet and green, She is seated in padmasana on a bejewelled gold throne. In Her two hands are a ladle and a pot, each brimming over with fresh anna. From Her fair face emerges an expression of the tenderest maternal compassion.
Note the crown and the richly detailed shringar of Devi Annapoorna. These have been executed with pure gold leaf embellishments on skilfully done gessowork across the canvas. A garland of fresh, many-coloured flowers complements the sheer proportion of gold in this Tanjore painting.
