Annapurna- a benevolent aspect of goddess Parvati is the embodiment of the nurturing nature of the great goddess. According to Puranas, goddess Parvati after a disagreement with Shiva, leaves her heavenly abode and comes to reside in Kashi. Meanwhile, the world was in a state of imbalance, in the absence of the great mother. Ultimately, Shiva visits goddess Parvati in Kashi, whereas Annapurna, the divine mother was nourishing her children who were starving in her absence, by feeding them with food or Anna. Visiting the court of Annapurna, Shiva gets her to return to Kailash, thus restoring the balance in Srishti with the auspicious presence of Adishakti (primordial feminine energy).
As the manifestation of motherly affection and powers of sustenance, Annapurna is a popularly revered goddess, who fulfills the primal human need for food. Following her popular iconography, this Tanjore painting depicts the goddess in her court, with arches, and drapes and seated on a throne. Adorned exquisitely with gold and golden attire, goddess Annapurna has the Sun as her halo and the moon as her Bindi (forehead mark), highlighting the supreme powers of the goddess. With a blissful smile enlivening her divine face, goddess Annapurna holds a bowl and ladle with Ksheer (a sweet dish of rice and milk), ready to bestow upon her devotees the ambrosia of her benevolence.
