According to the Vaishnava tradition, Andal, one of the greatest devotees of Sri Vishnu, became the bride of the Lord at the end of her mortal life, and merged with his icon, becoming eternally one with the Supreme Lord. Following her ascent to the heavenly Loka of Vishnu, temples in Tamil Nadu began worshipping Andal as a heavenly bride, exalting her oneness with Vishnu.
In this beautiful Tanjore painting, Andal stands in the center dressed like a Tamil bride, wearing gold ornaments and wrapped in a gorgeous pink saree. Her youthful countenance shines brilliantly, emanating innocence and purity. Holding a lotus flower with a parrot perched on it, Andal in this Thanjavur artwork is the zenith of devotion, where the devotee becomes the deity.
