Tirupati Balaji- the most powerful form of Vishnu on Earth, along with his beloved goddess Lakshmi in this marvelous Tanjore painting is a vision of divinity. Balaji appears in his popular form, adorned all over with ornate golden jewelry, a fragrant floral garland, Vaishnava tilak (forehead mark), and his attributes- Shankha (conch) and Chakra (discus). Goddess Lakshmi is enthroned on a Padma or lotus, alluding to her form as Padmavati (the lotus-born one), taken to accompany Vishnu as Tirupati.
The aureole that surrounds the deities is an exquisite element, adorned by Makara (mythical animals) on each side from whose mouth erupts the aura, with the Kirtimukha emblem in the center. A rich red silk drape in the background adds regalia to the image, while the vivid color palette brings a visual appeal to the Thanjavur painting. Embossing used in several places on the artwork lends it a three-dimensional beauty, which is a quintessential feature of traditional Tanjore.
