This is a real jaw-dropping Tanjore painting that gloriously portrays Ganapati, the leader of all the Ganas (attendants of Lord Shiva) seated on a dais. He is often worshiped at the start of every auspicious ceremony and rite as he removes all the obstacles from the path of success of his devotees for which he is known as Vighnaharta Shri Ganesha. Also regarded as the lord of arts and science, he showers his special mercy upon those individual souls who seek the path of the Absolute Truth by giving them the spiritual knowledge which is the ultimate goal of human life.
He has a head of an elephant and the body of a human and sits in lalitasana having eight arms (ashta bhuja). Clad in a perfectly pleated dhoti down to his ankles, he is bedecked with several gold ornaments on his gold-complexioned body and a huge jeweled crown adorns his head. This is a special Tanjore style artwork that uses pure gold coating to beautify the devotional icons and the same can be observed here. The pot-bellied Mahaganapati carries different items in his arms such as a lotus flower, an elephant goad, a sugarcane stock, and bunches of beautiful flowers. With his lower right hand, he holds his broken tusk for which he is known as Ekadanta (having one whole tusk and the other one being broken). His Shakti (internal potency) personified consort sits on his left thigh attired in a green saree holding a lotus flower in her hand. She is depicted as blue complexioned while the Lord’s complexion is like molten gold. Lord Ganesha along with Goddess Shakti exhibits his various roles of blessing his devotees with prosperity as well as killing the adharmic or asuras.
