The Tanjore style painting that you see here displays Lord Ganesha, the noble child of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati. He is revered as the God of prosperity as he removes obstacles from the path of success in his devotees’ lives both in the material as well as spiritual realm. This is the reason why the Lord is worshiped first in every auspicious ceremony and rite.
Lord Ganesha is seated on a lotus flower in an ocean with his Shakti (internal potency) personified consort seated on his lap. The lord has the head of an elephant and the body of a human having four arms (chaturbhuja). The upper hands hold a mace and a noose, the lower left hand carries a pot of jewels, while the right hand is in boon granting Varada mudra. He is clad in a full-length blue dhoti and adorned with a huge crown on his head and a thick neckpiece studded with shining white stones around the neck reaching to his pot belly. Goddess Shakti is attired in a green silk saree and adorned with several ornaments. She has a blue complexion and holds a lotus in her right hand, while Ganesha’s complexion is like the molten gold. Just as heat is inseparable from the fire, similarly, Lord Ganesha is inseparable from his Shakti. Note that the intricate detailing of the Prabhavali around them and major part of the icon are faultlessly embellished with 24 Karat gold, giving this painting an aesthetic look
