This painting is in itself a power because it portrays the most powerful form of Lord Ganesha, which is ‘Mahaganapati’. Ganapati, another name of Ganesha, inform us that he is the leader of all the Ganas (attendants) of his father Lord Shiva. Revered as the remover of obstacles from the path of success (both material and spiritual) and the bestower of prosperity, he is often worshiped first in all auspicious ceremonies and rites.
This is a special Tanjore style artwork which uses pure gold coating to beautify the devotional icons and the same can be observed here. The pot-bellied Mahaganapati is seated on a throne with the head of an elephant and the body of a human having ten arms carrying different items such as lotus flowers, a noose, a mace, a sugarcane stock, a pot of gems, a discus and a flower bunch. He is adorned with several ornaments and turns his tusk towards his upper left hand. His Shakti (internal potency) personified consort sits on his left thigh attired in a green saree holding a lotus flower in her hand. She is depicted as blue complexioned while the Lord’s complexion is like the molten gold. Lord Ganesha along with Goddess Shakti exhibits his various roles of blessing his devotees with prosperity as well as killing the adharmees or asuras.
