When Devi Lakshmi emerged from the Ksheersagara, she appeared seated on a blooming lotus, with lotus-like features, consecrated by elephants or Gaja, symbols of royalty and luxury. This roopa of goddess Lakshmi came to be worshipped as "Gajalakshmi"- one of the ancient most forms to be presented in Indian art. Revisiting the glory of Gajalakshmi aesthetically, this Tanjore painting presents the divine goddess inside an ornate shrine- with lofty arches and luxurious drapery.
Two milky white elephants perform the Abhishekam of the goddess, who is wrapped in queenly attire and ornamented beautifully. Lotus or Padma, a motif associated with Lakshmi is repeated in the artwork- as Devi's attributes, her garland, and her seat, adding a fragrant touch to the composition. Against a dark background, Gajalakshmi with her well-developed features and lithesome limbs created with embossing appears to be the source and end of cosmic auspiciousness.
