This miniature falls in the category that displays technical mastery and subtle colouring. The composition is not as complex as most Mughal miniatures and we also notice a simplification of style in this little masterpiece. The subtle shading of the pale background is painted with toned down golden pattern consisting mostly a flowers and foliage and also a few birds on the lower left corner. On a raised plinth in the center sits a man selling exotic fruits. He holds the balance to weigh the fruit; stones doubling up as weights lie next to him; a long sharp knife is also there to cut the fruit and offer for sampling to the fastidious customer.
The composition pales in importance against the line and colour. The line is steady and strong, amply making up for the lack of brilliant colours associated with the Mughal miniatures. The colours may be subdued but contain a mesmerizing impact.
