A forlorn looking waif, clutching a stray puppy and an urn in one hand, walks on. Her search for water does not seem to have yielded results and maybe the reason for her despair. The poverty stricken look that the painter strives to give is sadly missing the face is childishly chubby and the patches on the clothes look superficial. The shading on the face lends more volume to the already rounded face. But he manages to evoke pure emotion and feeling that of childhood and innocence in the child and a curiously haunting feeling all over.
Barring the little girl, all else do not possess a distinct line. The colours in the background merge, forming the earth, trees and skies. The artists' bend towards impressionism is quite evident here. The cloud-swept sky seems threatening and the green trees provide little relief.
The protagonist and the backdrop, by virtue of style, is not in harmony. The painting in totality speaks the language of colour, light and form.
