With the advent of Europeans and more specifically, the British, new developments began in the field of painting. British and other foreign influences of art had already penetrated the indigenous art of India and the Punjab paintings resulted in eclectic type of miniature paintings.

Parading while playing the bagpipes is the cadet of 40th Pathan regiment of the Bengal Infantry. The dull, ochre uniform is concealed by an overcloth of brightly coloured strips. The bag of the musical instrument matches with the colour of the turban. The wind instrument is totally alien to India. The turban is typically Pathani in style. The uniform is quite different to those of swift and alert. This member playing the bagpipes can afford to be lax, hence the loose and comfortable dress. A long dragger discreetly peeps out from below the shawl. His shadow falls on the ground as he walks.

There is no scope for bright colours in this portrait. The dull effect of the mud brown clothes has been cleverly over shadowed by the bright colours used for the stripes of the shawl.
