A correct understanding of anatomy and beauty is evident in this portrait of a Malyalee woman wearing a 'mundu' kind of garment, white in color with a simple border. It is a derivation of the saree, starting from beneath the arms and ending calf length; shoulders normally remaining bare. She is a robust, full-grown sensuous woman. Her frontal glance and demeanor is heavily posed. The way she holds the kerchief in one hand and wraps the other around herself shows her discomfiture while posing. Ethnic and laden with signs of tradition in attire and accessories, she looks simple and beautiful. She wears exquisite neck jewelry, ear-studs which are round and big and a nose stud, the pearl of which drops to her lips. Heavy ornamented gold and that studded with gemstones are depicted with as loving care as she wears them with. On around plump face are simple eyes, straight nose, full lips and a rounded chin. The features are not idealized - they have a serene majesty which imbues her with a gentle iconic character.
The naturalistic rendering of the face, anatomy, color etc., has been fully balanced. The lines are spontaneous and precise, the hand has indeed obeyed the commands of the artist's vision and feeling. In a calm, unobtrusive way, it allows for the mellow, pensive refinement of the subject to come through, inherently bound with delicate sensuality and natural dignity.
