Ekdanta is an epithet of Ganesha. It is a portmanteau of the words ‘eka’, which means one, and ‘danta’, which means tooth or, in His case, tusk. The single-tusked son of Shiva is painted in a deep gold colour. Through skilful strokes of the brush and exquisite layering of paint, the Ganesha bust in this painting gives off the impression of a brass-sculpted murti.

The elephant-head of Ganesha’s iconography, located at the bottom right corner of the canvas, is the focus of this composition. At the opposite corner dangles a peal of bells. A sacred symbol, they are engraved in keeping with traditional aesthetics.

An abstract bitone background. Swathes of deep, almost black, charcoal. Superimposed with luxuriant splotches of white. The overtones of gold on the white set off the metallics predominating the twin subject of the painting.
