Dushyanta and Shakuntala, the couple whose tale is narrated in the Mahabharata and later in Abhigyanashakuntalam of Kalidas, first met in the hermitage of Kanva rishi. Chasing a deer, Dushyanta saw Shakuntala and was smitten instantly. This oil painting takes us to the grooves where the two crossed paths, surrounded by a flowing river, greenery, and a small hut in the background. Shakuntala appears to have emerged from the river after bathing when she was stopped by Dushyanta, who had approached her with his “Pranaya-Nivedana”- the request for love.
