Iconographic images are a popular subject with the craftspeople but genre scenes of day to day living are also produced when their creative instincts take a free turn. One such scene of a regular Indian houses hold is depicted here in batik work done on cotton fabric.

What we see here, is a simple man dressed in a simple dhoti kurta and a turban. Over the kurta, he wears a short green jacket. In front of his lies a plate with chapattis, daal, vegetables and inconspicuously placed green chillies and onions. Close to the plate lies a pot containing water. One of his hands clasps his folded knee and the other is in the process of taking a morsel of food to his mouth as he looks inquiringly towards his wife. The wife wears a green choli and a red saree. She wears earring and a string of beads in her neck. In both the wrists, she wears bangles, and not to be missed a dot of nose stud. Following the Indian tradition she wears a dot in the middle of the forehead and shall eat when the husband is well fed. Her black hair flow down her right shoulder. Her head is bend and eyes downcast as she fiddles with her fingers. She tells her husband of the events of the day as he listens attentively. The gestures lend a narrative element to the work. In batik expressions are usually hard to capture, but the artist has brilliantly done that here. Green, red and ochre are the prime colours used here. The crackle effect can be effectively seen wherever white has been used.

A touching view of simplicity and domestic harmony.
