Look at the intricate detailing of this epic painting that features Dhanvantari, who is considered to be a form of Lord Vishnu. At the time of Samudramanthan, He emerged from the ocean of milk to deliver the elixir for immortality called ‘Amrita’ to all the demigods. Because He appeared with a pot of Amrita, He is considered to be the God of Ayurveda. The alluring Tanjore paintings give a strong essence of the authentic artwork of South India and represent its rich culture and tradition.
Here, the divine form of Lord Vishnu is seated on a throne in His four-handed form. He puts his right foot on a pure full-blown lotus which is the symbol of purity and it shows that He is above the three modes of material nature, while His left leg remains folded above. His complexion resembles the color of the fresh monsoon clouds. Clad in a perfectly pleated bright yellow dhoti down to His ankles, and adorned with a Vaijanti garland and a long chain containing the effulgent Kaustubh gem, the Lord appears just like the glowing Sun. The huge jeweled crown on His head represents His exalted personality and an aureole behind it is very pleasing to see. He holds the divine Sudarshana Chakara between two fingers of the upper right hand, the Panchjanya conch shell between two fingers of the left hand, a leech in his lower left hand, and the pot containing Amrita in the right hand. Note the way the artist has embellished almost everything with 24 Karat Gold studded with shining stones which is the main characteristic of Tanjore artwork.
