The goddess as we see here is dark skinned yet radiant, subsuming within her all the colours in creation and symbolizing at the same time the destruction that she wrecks. Her image as the destroyer is quite graphic here - necklace of human heads, skull in hand, a dagger in her raised hand etc. She is richly bejewelled - a fancy crown, necklaces, armlets, bracelets etc. The dead body that she rests so the Shava, or literally 'corpse' which signifies many things - her triumph in general, the limits of time, and sometimes Shiva bereft of his power when his Shakti has emanated itself and left him.
The artist uses black background to enhance the dark aspect of the goddess. The niche has multiple and intricate floral patterns, giving the painting a decorative appeal as well.
