All the Lilas of Liladhara Krishna encapsulated in the golden realm of Tanjore, this 5-foot-wide masterpiece painting blends the artist’s creativity with the heritage techniques of the art.
In the horizontally laid canvas, Krishna sits surrounded by his family and servers, relishing in a graceful dance performance, like a king.
In the foreground sits a woman painter, creating the portrait of the most beautiful Krishna.
The architecture of Krishna’s court is made divine not only by the rich use of gold embossing, but also by the sacred images of Gandabherunda (a cosmic form of Krishna) above the Lord, standing Krishna painting, and Dashavatara and Ashtalakshmi icons in the ceiling.
On the ceiling is also Vaata-patra Shaayi Krishna, lying on a banyan leaf, an auspicious and dotting image, residing in which Krishna appears to be appreciating the grandeur of his own court. The visual language of the painting and its masterful details are all inspired by the courts of Thanjavur and Maratha Nayakas, who patronized the regal art form, resulting in an aesthetics that is eternally luxurious, perfect for bringing divine beings on earth.
