The handsome Lord Krishna sits between His two wives, Satyabhama and Rukmini. He is seated in a twisted lalitasana, on a throne of gold and velvet trims. Clad in a peeta-coloured (amber) dhoti and ample jewellery, both of which (the hems of the dhoti) have been made with gold-layered gessowork.
This is the defining feature of the authentic Thanjavur painting. The same applies to the body of the throne and the cushioned footrest in the foreground as well as the plate that bears offerings of fruit and sacred leaf. The ornaments on His wives’ figures and hair are also made of pure gold embellishment.
The temple entrance-like archway along the upper edge of the painting is executed in luxuriant detail. Emerald-coloured upholstery and inky blue skies complete the colour palette of the composition. The wives of Krishna are devoted to the service of their Lord and master, who in His turn reciprocates with the deepest gratitude and love. All of this is writ expressively on each face.
