Yu, the Chinese word for jade, took on a larger meaning and was used to describe greatness and beauty. A beautiful woman was known as "jade woman," and the highest Taoist divinity was referred to as the "Jade Emperor."
Thus has the skilled artist delineated the graceful form of Green Tara in the resplendent hue of the highest grade of jade. Bedecked in sumptuous garments and jewels, the goddess sits on an elaborate lotus pedestal, gazing compassionately at the viewer. Both her hands gently grip, between the thumb and forefinger, stems which terminate into full-blown lotuses at her shoulders.
Her abdomen sensuously curves upwards, changes direction at the breasts, and then continues to sway graciously in the opposite direction. This masterly treatment of the female body speaks volumes for the artist's profound appreciation of the feminine form and this artwork is but a loving and living statement of his intense devotion to and experience of the same.
