There is a group of ten goddesses known as the Mahavidyas, considered a bizarre creation of radical groups within the Hindu tradition viz. Tantra. As Chinnamasta, 'the decapitated,' Kali is intoxicated with divine energy and feeds upon her own blood, while drenching two others of her aspects, positive and negative. They symbolize the illusion of duality. The couple beneath her feet are the originating couple, Kama and Rati, from whom all creation springs but which she mocks, being herself the unique source of everything. The artist has them covered with a blanket adorned with a yantra. The goddess herself wears a garland of skulls and in her hands she holds a chopper and her own head. Her two aspects raise their heads to partake the flowing blood.
The empty space around the goddess is filled with colourful flowers and leaves on sturdy stems.
