A wood-framed Tanjore painting made on a grand scale. It is Gopala, the name given to the baala-roopa or child-manifestation of Krishna. Limbs gathered in a rudimentary lalitasana, a golden pot of butter-made goodies in the crevice of His left hand. Vaishnava symbols embossed around the body of the pot.
Lord Gopala is seated on a throne of gold. Behind Him are Balarama and Sudama to His left, Satyabhama and Rukmini to the right. Arching above the heads of these five figures is a series of templetops, designed in keeping with traditional architecture of the South (where Tanjore art originated) and embellished thickly with pure gold.
The gold-layered gessowork is studded with miniscule red and green stones that resemble rubies and emeralds. The solid azure of the skies and the deep crimson of the background within the temple brings out the glittering gold colour.
