Krishna is the proprietor of everything and everyone in the Universe. Although He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, He appeared on the earth as an ordinary child to reciprocate love between Him and His devotees because He is the source of all pleasures. Krishna’s wonderful Vrindavan pastimes are always very enchanting for everyone to read and hear. Thus, whoever associates with Him in any way, gets the highest form of pleasure in return, then what to speak of His pure devotees.
In this Tanjore painting, Makhanchor Krishna is depicted eating butter who is very fond of stealing butter pots from the houses of gopis. Here, He is joyfully seated on a recliner, His transcendental body adorned with several ornaments and a flower garland, and His head with a peacock feather. He holds a big pot filled with butter balls around His left arm and takes one in His right hand to gulp it down right away. Mother Yashoda stands next to her sweet child Krishna whom she considers her heart and soul.
She is clad in a beautiful saree and ornamented with several jewels. A parrot can be seen sitting on her left hand and she holds a butter ball in the right one to offer it to Krishna. A great motherly affection is seen on the face of Maa Yashoda as she looks at the moonlike face of her child. The vibrant colors and gold coating embellishment in this painting give the essence of the unconditional love between Mother Yashoda and Krishna which is enough to melt everyone’s heart.
