This beautiful Tanjore painting portrays He who is the source of all pleasure and the ocean of bliss. He is Lord Krishna, who although is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, still appeared on the earth in Dwapar Yuga as an ordinary child and performed transcendental pastimes with His beloved devotees to attract the fallen and ignorant souls into God consciousness. His sweet Vrindavan pastimes are always pleasing to hear or read.
The painting that you see here depicts the childhood form of Lord Krishna seated on a recliner. Krishna’s bodily features are very attractive; the soft and gentle smile on His moonlike face is sweeter than honey, His eyes appear like the sun and moon, His eyebrows are like the arrows that pierce everyone’s hearts softly. Mother Yashoda has decorated her sweet child with several ornaments that cover most of His naked body. Krishna loved stealing and eating butter from the houses of gopis (cowherd girls) for which He is also known as Makhan chor. He holds a big pot of butter around His left arm which has been undoubtedly stolen by Him. He holds a butterball in the right hand and is ready to gulp it down at any moment. Note how He slightly tilts His delicate neck towards one side and looks so innocent. The fact that this painting has been majorly embellished with pure gold coating and sequences of shining stones is really praiseworthy. This feature of Tanjore style artwork makes it stand out from the ordinary ones.
