The Leela of Bal Krishna is so that it charms every heart of Brijwasis and the rest of the world alike. In this Tanjore painting, Krishna is shown as a crawling child. He holds a piece of butter in one hand while the other holds a pot full of it, likely stolen from the gopis as the story goes. As a child, Shri Krishna was very playful. He used to gather his friends with him and sneak into the houses in his neighborhood. There, they would form a ladder for him as he tried to reach for the butter that was kept high and out of his reach. Having stolen the butter, he would distribute it among his friends and even monkeys.
Eating butter was perhaps one of his favorite activities during childhood. Such events are the reason why he is known as Makhan chor (butter thief). As the Supreme Lord is incarnated as an innocent child, he is seen as a regular person. These stories of his mischief only tell the people about how children can be a way for God to assert his agency in the world. They are the medium through which he shows the wonders of divinity.
