A painting of the pancamukhi Ganesha is sure to add to the spiritual ethos and the sacredness of your space. The word pancamukhi is a portmanteau of ‘panca’, which means five, and ‘mukhi’, which means faced. The number five may stand for many things in Indian thought, but the pancamukhi roopa (form) of Ganesha is symbolic of the five koshas (aspects of being).
As such, the painting that you see on this page is an iconographic representation of the highest, the most complete state of being (in the yogic sense of the term, because ‘kosha’ is a concept from yoga). The eight-armed aspect further adds to the gravity of the Ganesha-roopa. Each of the faces bears a steady gaze and a composure of omniscience. He is seated on an ornate throne housed within a traditional temple structure.
In keeping with the Tanjore idiom, the major part of this painting is inlaid with 24K gold. From the perfectly symmetrical templetop, to the Kirtimukham at the zenith of His throne; from the crowns on His many heads and the adornments on His body, to the throne of solid metal He is seated on. Strategically embedded cut-glass beads convey the impression of miniscule precious stones all over the composition.
