This is a painting of a nocturnal/crepuscular flying mammal of the order Chiroptera - bat in a layman's language. It has modified forelimbs that serve as wings and are covered a membranous skin extending to the hind limbs. There is a graphic description of detail, accuracy in form and the characteristic features are rendered wonderfully. The membrane connecting the limbs has been shaded in such a manner as to appear translucent. The bushy tail makes it look more like a squirrel than a regular bat picture that we see. The sharp claws enable it to cling to trees and branches. There is realism and graphic conciseness in the depiction of the face. Its large eyes may not be as helpful as the small ears that spring out of its head. It is a well known fact that bats can receive sound waves of decibels not audible to other mammals or animals.
The background is as pale and dull as the painted subject is bright and lively. The top and bottom portion of this remarkable painting has text in Arabic. The wider margin on the right side explains it being a part of a book, the larger parts of which have been lost to us forever.
