A kumbha or a kalash is a pitcher placed by the side of the deity before different religious rites. Symbolically, it stands for mother goddess in general or goddess Lakshmi in particular.

The creator of this batik work has given prime importance to ornamentation. The ochre background is resplendent with black criss-cross lines. The space above and below the oval frame has been used by flowers & leaves. Inside the frame lies the kumbha, an earthen pot painted white in colour. The kumbha is generally kept filled with water and that water is said to be the divine essence. The mouth of the kumbha has a lotus flower and above that emerges large leaves. The leaves kept at the mouth of the kumbh are generally of five specific species. The flower in between the leaves is for ornamentation purpose.

On either side of the kumbha are prominently placed eyes. Symbolically, they represent the eyes of the goddess who keeps an eye on the devotees and keep them from harm or ill luck.
