The dancing pancamukha (the one with five faces) balances upon a single leg on the back of the docile murine vahana. The dynamic figure is framed in a delicate temple structure. It is a vertical panel at the heart of a composite pattachitra comprising numerous panels of Ganesha imagery.
The horizontal one along the midline of the canvas, right on top of the central panel, features a reclining Ganesha. The ones that surround these two are more or less of uniform shape and ratio. In the lateral ones, the Lord is depicted as seated; while in the remaining ones, as standing. The standing Ganesha figures are all chaturbhujadhari (four-armed). Two of the seated ones, in the upper half of the canvas, are trimukhadhari (possessed of three faces). All the figures have gigantic lotus blooms for throne and pedestal.
Zoom in on each of the Ganesha panels to appreciate the skilful execution of His iconography. Pattachitras are made on handmade canvases using rudimentary drawing instruments and locally produced paints. As such, the level of detail and dynamism introduced into each of the miniature panels makes this a remarkable work of art.
