The Thanjavur painting that you see on this page is meant to grace the home of the finest Lakshmi Devi devotee. It is a composite Tanjore painting of nine panels arranged in uniform rows and columns. Each panel depicts one of the Ashtalakshmis (‘ashta’ means eight and refers to the eight different roopas or forms of Lakshmi Mata), while the one at the centre shows Her standing next to Lord Vishnu.
The Ashtalakshmis are seated on deep pink lotus-bloom thrones. In the central panel, Vishnu-Lakshmi are standing on a flattened lotus bloom. The number of arms of each roopa ranges from four to eight, while next to Her husband She is depicted with two arms only. The element of deep blue waters is common to all the panels in this Tanjore painting.
The gold embellishments in this work of Thanjavur art could be found in the miniscule adornments on each of the ten figures. Also, a temple entrance-like structure frames each of the panels. The same are made by skilfully layering textured gold on gesso.
