Sitting atop a fierce lion whose face is twisted in a majestic roar, Goddess Durga sits in her Ashtabhuja (eight-armed) form, benevolent yet a force to be reckoned with. She is the remover of obstacles and all suffering. The trinity of Brahma (the creator), Vishnu (the sustainer), and Mahesh (the destroyer) all came together for Goddess Durga to take birth. Thus, she is also known as the goddess of the cosmos. Her ashtabhuja form is also known as Goddess Kushmanda. Venerated on the fourth day of Navaratri, she is known to bring good health and wealth to her devotees.
According to legends, the first thing, before the universe and all the gods, there was only darkness. Then, in that darkness suddenly shone a divine light, flooding the entire universe which contained nothing. It then took the shape of Goddess Kushmanda and when she smiled upon the endless night, from it a new universe was born. She brought forth the cosmic egg and from it emerged our planet, Earth, and all the other planets, stars, and endless energy. Hers is the power that sustains everyone—she is Shakti herself. In this painting, she sits holding six weapons while two of her hands are in abhaya and varada mudra, blessing her followers eternally.
