The protagonists in this painting do not form the central theme - the architecture, the landscape etc. hold equal importance. The artist apparently preferred to construct the painting clearly and divide the space according to colour and form elements rather than create a sense of space with plausible depth.
The old ascetic sits on an animal skin against a bolster. He holds pages of a manuscript in a bid to forecast something in which the yogini seems to be interested in. She looks at him intently while holding the veena, resting on her lap.
The artist gives the background a marked share of importance. The left side is occupied by architecture, while the right has a lotus pond with flowers and birds - the harsh architecture is mellowed by the softly flowing water. A stony hill and a couple of trees lead the viewer's eye to the sky streaked with colour and light successfully evoking dawn or dusk.
