Apsara: Stone Sculpture Painting | Watercolor on Paper

$285
Only 1 available
Housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, dating back to the times of the Chandela rulers of India (11th century CE), the subject of this watercolor on canvas is a celestial nymph or Apsara, who in the original artwork, a granite stone sculpture, strikes the most spell-binding pose, tilting her head in a direction, one foot raised and eyes looking back as if inspecting her beauty or looking behind herself to catch a glimpse of her ornamentation from all sides.

Taking only the head of the Apsara from MET, Achintya Hazra brings to the audience, a piece from the majestic art traditions of India. The composition of this Apsara watercolor painting is monotone, created using strokes of black against the white canvas to unveil the ethereal beauty of the nymph.

The Apsara is wearing a five-pronged crown which is a commonly used attribute in Buddhist iconography. Her brows are luxuriant yet elongated and sit over a pair of large almond eyes, a sharp nose, and pleasing lips that make the countenance of the celestial nymph, divine. Large circular earrings known as Kundala frame the Apsara’s face. Ornate necklaces in many layers are placed close to the shapely neck of the Apsara, sharing an intricacy in making with the crown.

Accentuated by her swift turn, the bosom of the nymph is heavy, emphasizing the fertility and youthfulness of the female form. with a trained hand, Achintya Hazra has done an unforgettable job- of creating a three-dimensional image on paper. Brimming with youth, beauty, and artistic quality, this watercolor on canvas Apsara painting will enhance the aesthetic feel of your space, with her celestial presence.
