Using pure pigments and simple themes, they create stories in picture. This painting narrates an interesting episode concerning the great asura Raktabija, who had a boon that whenever a drop of blood fell from his body on the ground, an army of asuras would arise. Devi, in her form as Chamunda, went on drinking Raktabija's blood without letting a single drop fall on the ground.
Chamunda, is seen here in her horrendous form with a garland of skulls and a girdle of severed limbs. She looks furious as she chops and kills with abandon. The right side of the canvas is blood red, containing an army of asuras, which the Devi sucks in. The goddess' hair forms the background behind her, leaving little space for the floral fillings that abound all empty spaces in a Madhubani painting.
