Amrapali, the Ganika (courtesan) from Vaishali is one of the few women from ancient India whose character has left a lasting mark on artists. Her legendary beauty and skills as a dancer have been celebrated in sculptures, poetry, and paintings. One of these celebrations is this oil on canvas showing Amrapali standing in the Sabhagar (auditorium) of Vaishali. Sculptures of Apsaras (celestial maidens) form the backdrop, their lithesome form belittled by the brilliantly glowing Amrapali who is dressed in the manner of classical Indian dancers.
