Bodhisattva Lokeshvara has no less than 108 roopas (forms). The 71st of these forms is called Amoghapasha, who stands at the heart of this gorgeous, multitude-of-Lokeshvara thangka. Tall and slender and eight-armed, He looks on with a composure of perfect equanimity and omniscience. The golden crown on His head and the ample gold jewellery on His person visually blends in with the roseate complexion of His divine form.
The Amoghapasha iconography that you see on this page is in keeping with Machhandar Vahal (Kathamndu, Nepal). The gentle gradient of His halo behind His head and the flower-laden vines emerging from His feet add to the soft, soothing demeanour of the Bodhisattva. The background landscape, unlike run-of-the-mill single-deity thangkas, is relatively plain and unassuming.
This shifts focus to the multitude of Lokeshvara manifestations surrounding Amoghapasha. In addition to the Lokeshvara roopas, one may locate other Buddhist deities such as the wrathful Lord Mahakala at the centre along the lower edge of the canvas and the stately Shakyamuni at the zenith.
