Amitabha Buddha is a celestial being who is highly respected in Mahayana Buddhism, especially in Pure Land Buddhism. He is also known as Amitayus or Amituofo. One of the Five Dhyani Buddhas, Amitabha is connected to Sukhavati, the Western Pure Land. Often shown in a state of profound meditation, Amitabha is shown with a kind and understanding expression, perched on a lotus seat, her hands clasped in the mudra of meditation, and an alms bowl in her palms. Amitabha is associated with the color red, which stands for compassion, love, and the transformational force of insight.
It is customary to recite Amitabha's name to seek rebirth in the Pure Land and achieve enlightenment under the guidance of Amitabha's compassionate vow, particularly through the practice of the Amitabha Sutra and Pure Land Buddhism.
