In his hermitage situated in the lap of nature, Adi Shankaracharya, also known as Jagad Guru or the Universal Teacher, is surrounded by his four disciples. The artist of this oil painting has done astute work by giving the great teacher a larger frame, in order to highlight his supreme status. There seems to be an intellectual conversation going on between the master and the students. Symbolizing this spiritual exercise are two Hamsa or swans who represent the awakened soul, who swim in the river of knowledge.
