Adi-Guru(first teacher) and Jagad-Guru (world teacher) are the epithets used for Shankaracharya, the great yogi who gave Hinduism its current shape. Enriching the philosophy of Advaita (non-dualistic) Vedanta with his ideas, Shankaracharya laid paths for devotees to achieve gyan (knowledge), bhakti (devotion), and Mukti (salvation), by aiming at the oneness of soul and divine. A brilliant red aura surrounds Shankaracharya in this oil painting, who is seated on an aasana (mat) of tiger hide, holding a stick and Vedas in his hands. Aabhamandala (halo) and ash marks underline his supreme asceticism.
