This colorful Tanjore painting gloriously portrays Lord Ram, also known as “Maryada Purushottam”, who appeared on the earth in Treta Yuga to teach people how to live life in accordance with the principles of Dharma. He lived a life of purity, penance and austerities; not only was He a great warrior, but also a responsible son, a dutiful husband, a valiant King, and a loving brother. Although He appeared as an ordinary human, He remained above the mode of material nature because the Supreme Lord always remains Superior and is not subject to the material laws of nature.
The Tanjore style artwork that we see here captures the glorious moment when Lord Rama, along with His eternal consort Sita, and loyal brother Lakshman returned to Ayodhya after completing fourteen years of Vanvas which was full of sacrifices and hardships. The Lord is seated on a huge throne and is crowned as the King of Ayodhya and Mother Sita as the Queen. On this auspicious occasion, all the devatas (Lord Shiva, Lord Brahma, Lord Ganesha, and the great sage Narada Muni) have appeared in the province of Ayodhya to pay their humble obeisance unto Lord Ram and Goddess Sita. Lakshman, Bharata and Shatughna humbly fold their hands in their brother’s honor. Among everyone present there, the great servant of the Lord, Hanuman, serves the Lord’s lotus feet with love and devotion with his eyes completely intoxicated with pure bliss. Both Lord Rama in His bluish complexion like the fresh monsoon clouds and Mother Sita in Her molten gold complexion are decked up with several ornaments and adorned with a flower garland. The Lord with no amount of pride on His face brings a soft smile on His face and wishes for the best service unto the people of Ayodhya.
