Embossed in gold, this Tanjore painting sets the scene on the day of Lord Rama's coronation, after the defeat of Ravana and Rama’s return to Ayodhya. Lord Rama is considered Maryada Purushottam (the ideal man) and has proved himself to be so again and again with his benevolence and his triumph over evil. He sits with his wife, Devi Sita, surrounded by his brothers Laxman, Bharat, and Shatrugan, who are all devoted to him.
For fourteen years, he traversed the forest during his vanvas as per his father’s request, accompanied by Sita and Laxman. He walked the path of goodness and dharma. Rama Darbar as a painting symbolizes the coming together of all living beings in celebration—a gathering of family, friends and subjects alike. In this painting, Lord Hanuman, the monkey king, touches his feet in supplication, humbled to be in the presence of the Lord for whom he keeps unending love in his heart. The saptarishis (seven saints) have come to bless the divine couple, Rama and Sita. Even Vibhishan, the righteous brother of demon king Ravana, has come to watch this joyous occasion all the way from Lanka. With the sun and the moon as witnesses, Lord Rama is finally crowned as the rightful king to Ayodhya.
