A composite pattachitra to grace the home of the Vaishnava devotee. Pattachitra is the name given to the folk art of Odisha. The temple town of Puri is the hub of this traditional Indian art form. It is a portmanteau of the words ‘patta’, which is the name given to the handmade canvas from locally produced materials, and ‘chitra’, which is the vernacular word for image.
A collection of panels of varying sizes and shapes are arranged across the surface area of the patta. The three along the centre-horizontal are more angular in shape, whereas the ones along the four edges are circular. Each depicts an episode from the life of Lord Rama, the upholder of dharma, of unwavering character and triumph over adharma.
The elongated panel at the centre depicts Rama with His beloved Seeta next to Him. They are surrounded by Bharata, Shatrughna, Lakshmana, and Hanuman. The three-panel ensemble at the centre is framed by a series of kneeling-namaskaram Hanuman along the horizontal edges, and the dashavatara along the vertical ones.
