Lord Shiva makes for an eclectic narrative. He is at once all-annihilating and the fount of life. He is both the divine householder and the unrelenting ascetic. Contained with Him is as much of purusha as of prakrti. The pattachitra that you see on this page is a composite of multiple panels which capture the diverse essence of Shiva.
Three angular panels are arranged horizontally across the centre. There’s the dancing Sadashiva on the back of Apasmara as Nandi looks on. To the right of the Sadashiva panel is the seated Ardhanarishvara. To the left is Harihara, seated in the same rudimentary bhadrasana stance. In each panel, the backdrop is rugged and natural, predominated by rock rather than verdure.
The beauty of this pattachitra lies in the fact that each panel has been painted with the same skill and attention to detail. As such, they may be appreciated as standalone works of miniature art. Given the prevalence of rough-hewn drawing instruments and natural dyes in this form of folk art, this makes it a superb collectible of deep spiritual value.
