Associated with protection, motherhood, sustenance and destruction, Goddess Durga is considered as the one who furiously fights against the demons to restore Dharma on the earth. Being a humble servant of Lord Hari, she acts as Maya Devi (illusory or external energy of the Lord) as well as protects the mother earth or nature from the ill acts of the fallen souls. With her rage, she kills the demon-like souls who increase irreligiosity while her merciful nature allows spiritual enlightenment of those who take to the path of the Absolute Truth. One who surrenders unto the lotus feet of the Lord is no longer trapped in the clutches of Maya and thus becomes free from the cycle of repeated births and deaths, and thus goes back home, back to Godhead.
Exotic India presents to you this remarkable piece of Tanjore artwork displaying powerful yet a calm form of Goddess Durga. Draped in a silk saree and elaborately adorned with several long chains around her neck, she stands with a lion (her divine mount) with a fierce face and a curved tail. Her ten arms that carry different weapons and items represent her enormous power; with her left arms she holds Agni, a conch shell (shankha), the noose and a Trident while the right arms carry a discus (Chakra), a bow and an arrow, a mace, a sword and the lower hand is in protective Abhaya Mudra. Her head bears a huge jeweled crown that represents her exalted personality. The burning fire (symbol of her rage) casts a golden shade on her beautiful face. It becomes a nightmare for the Adharmees (ignorant souls) who have to be slain by her weapons.
