Sarasvati is the Hindu deity of wisdom and speech in all cosmos. The goddess Sarasvati is manifest where human culture exists. The painting you see here is a Tanjore style work, which is known for its use of vibrant colours and gold coating studded with gleaming stones to adorn devotional icons. The goddess is portrayed as a beautiful woman dressed entirely in white. She is sitting on a golden throne that is embossed with red and green stones. The four-armed deity is wearing a golden crown. She is a symbol of grace, beauty, and devotion, holding the rosary in her left hand and her playing instrument veena in her right hand she holds scrolled Vedas which signifies divine, eternal, and true knowledge. The background of an engrailed arch is gorgeously laid out with gold leaf and impressive ivory inlay work on the throne is done by an artist from Mysore. In this painting, prominence is given to the event of Sarasvati sitting on the throne instead of emerging from her white swan. The artist very successfully visualized the event with his imagination and depicted the figure in gorgeous ivory and lustrous goldwork.
