Goddess Durga is worshiped during Durga Puja and Navaratri. She is revered as Mother Durga due to her act of wrath for the protection of good and destruction of evil to show that Adharma can win over Dharma. When the Supreme Personality of Godhead created the three modes of material nature, Goddess Durga was associated with Tamas, hence, she is also regarded as the destroyer of ignorance in the individual souls so that they can come out of the bondage of the illusion (maya).
This is the calmest form (Shant Swarup) of Maa Durga, sitting on her mount Lion having eight arms (ashtabhuja) carrying different weapons expressing her martial skills. She holds a sword, an arrow, and a mace with the three upper left hands, while the lower hand is in resting posture. The three upper right hand a discus, a trident and a lotus flower, while the lower hand is in Abhaya Mudra (fear not hand posture).
She is attired in a golden saree with red thin borders and adorned with several jewels as well as the huge crown on her head. Although she is always depicted with various weapons in her hands, a gentle smile on her beautiful face depicts her extremely merciful nature towards her devotees. She blesses them with the knowledge of the Absolute Truth which is the highest welfare of mankind.
