When the Kshatriya race turns out to be the enemy rather than the protector of the Brahmins, and abandons the path of virtue, courts hell, becoming a thorn pricking the side of the world, and is exalted by providence only for its (imminent) destruction, the Supreme Lord appears as Parashurama of tremendous prowess, and exterminates the entire race of Kshatriyas twenty-one times with his sharp edged axe.
