The Camel That Strayed

$95
Gujarat is the home of cheerful patchwork. Be it in the local women’s and men’s fashion or the art produced in the region, these characteristically sewn on patches are a signature of the Gujarati make. The work you see on this page is a landscape-oriented painting of a camel, the ship of the Thar. Because the state is located across the great Northwestern desert, these animals are a common feature of life for Gujaratis.

The silhouette is rudimentary, but apt. From the sucked-in cheeks and the long neck, to the hump and the short, thick tail, each of these aspects are set apart by a distinctive embroidered patch. In fact, the neck is made from two different, albeit identical, patches. Zoom in on the borders to take in the beauty of the handiwork that has gone into the high-precision finish of the composition. The patches themselves come with bits of monotone or complementary-coloured embroidery of local floral observations.

The background makes a statement of the desert dusk. The colour palette of the patches therein comprises of dark blues and purples and blacks, each embroidered with a mandatory element of white. The subject is seemingly trudging along the desert in the middle of the night, probably having strayed from its master’s stock in bovine innocence.
