Tribal art in India is known for its portrayal of the “every day”, the mundane in the most attractive and tasteful manner. For example, have a look at this brass lady head modelled using a tribal lady as its muse- simple, natural, and striking in appearance.
The first thing that catches the eye is the woman’s elaborate hairdo, giving her a distinct look. The hair is tightly secured in a bun, depicted by the straightness of the incised lines used to show the strands of hair. On the back one can see a comb- used as toiletry as well as a hair accessory by many tribes in India. The forehead of the lady is adorned with ethnic marks, used by women across India to enhance their natural beauty. Her eyes are drooping and consequently deep, capturing the attention of the onlooker immediately. The lady wears her traditional jewellery- two piercings on her ears and two piercings for her nose pins, distinctly Tamil in appearance. The artist has to be commended here for putting life into this brasswork through a marvellous simplicity.
