This Vintage Large Brass Serving Bowl is handmade and is known by many names. In some regions, it is called the Gokarnan and in some, it is known as the Rasavelli. Its function remains more or less the same in every region. It is used for serving liquid food during feasts and normal house meals. It was probably designed to disburse Rasam which is a spicy South Indian soup-like meal that is typically eaten with rice. The name Gokarnan is derived from the pattern, which mimics cow ears. The pointed mouth aids in the pouring of liquids without spilling. The handle is for holding the container. This item has been used for generations to serve people with a full supper.
